Why We Exist

No woman should die becoming a mother. The CDC states that three times as many black women die due to complications of pregnancy or childbirth than white women in the US. The fact that black women and their families experience this devastation at such a disproportionate rate is unconscionable. 3 Times As Many, Inc. exists to provide services and support to pregnant black women, and put racial disparities in the hearts and minds of people everywhere. Literally, we expose all with whom we make contact, to the maternal health disparities by race, with the very mention of our name. Our 501 (c)(3) namesake is that heartbreaking statistic from the CDC.

The Problem

Data from the CDC shows black women are three times more likely to die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth than white women: 42.8 black women die per 100,000 live births, as opposed to 12.5 white women who die and 17.3 women of other races. As calamitous as that reality is, the CDC goes on to share that approximately 60% of all maternal deaths were PREVENTABLE!

Slightly less than twice as many black infants are born with low birth weight (the medical equivalent of developmentally delayed) than white infants in the United States.  Black women and their babies are disproportionately at risk for adverse pregnancy and childbirth outcomes than their white counterparts.
