Data from the CDC shows black women are three times more likely to die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth than white women: 42.8 black women die per 100,000 live births, as opposed to 12.5 white women who die and 17.3 women of other races. As calamitous as that reality is, the CDC goes on to share that approximately 60% of all maternal deaths were PREVENTABLE!
Slightly less than twice as many black infants are born with low birth weight (the medical equivalent of developmentally delayed) than white infants in the United States. Black women and their babies are disproportionately at risk for adverse pregnancy and childbirth outcomes than their white counterparts.
